For over 30 years, LSI has been a leader in its commitment to the environment. LSI is among the first manufacturers to eliminate solvent inks and the use of heavy metals. The Louisville-based manufacturer of the Versa, Cirqa and Plexus wallcovering brands is committed to the aggressive reduction, recovery, recycling and reuse of wallcovering materials. LSI developed Second-Look, the first recycling program for post-consumer vinyl wallcovering. This comprehensive sustainable program reclaims previously used vinyl wallcovering and recycles it into new designs with 20% recycled content, including a minimum of 10% post-consumer material. LSI covers the freight to reclaim wallcovering from the field. Vinyl wallcoverings made by any manufacturer are accepted but screened for environmental integrity. Second-Look can recycle wallcoverings repeatedly, extending the already long life cycle of the product and keeping it out of landfills almost indefinitely. LSI is continually researching eco-friendly materials and in 2001, introduced Terren®, a cellulose-based substrate that is available in the Versa n’viro® collection. Most LSI wallcoverings are low-VOC and all use water-based inks and adhesives and incorporate a mildew-inhibiting agent that helps prevent fungal and other microbiological growth. Permavent™, a microventing technology is available to manage mobile moisture in walls by allowing the wallcovering to “breathe.” These technologies support a healthy indoor air environment. A member of USGBC and IIDA, LSI consciously practices environmental stewardship and endeavors to conduct its business in a manner consistent with sustainable development. This commitment takes three forms: 1) Providing sustainable products and services to the construction and building interiors markets. 2) Safeguarding the health and safety of employees and supporting communities where LSI does business. 3) Maintaining a sustained and meaningful environmental stewardship program at its three manufacturing facilities, all located in the United States. LSI maintains an aggressive waste management plan at its manufacturing facilities that reduces and captures in-process waste to be reused. Low-emitting materials are used in the manufacturing process to preserve employee health, to reduce the amount and type of wastes generated, and to produce wallcovering to meet strict indoor air and environmental quality standards. LSI’s commitment to sustainability is an ongoing mission that includes monitoring performance, as well as continued research and development of new processes and materials. In addition to complying with environmental, health and safety regulations, LSI empowers employees to undertake responsibility for environmental stewardship and encourages suppliers and customers to share ownership in the fundamental goal of sustainability.
